A fantastical view of another planet with a baby microraptor cracking out of its egg, with its parent flying overhead. Set in an arid landscape with green shoots breaking through. The horizon with a new sunrise, showing Mars, a new star being born and earth in the distance. I wanted to name the piece after the name of the planet and decided on Janus as he was the God of Beginnings.

I thought about what ‘new beginnings’ meant to me and I kept coming back to the idea of birth. I wanted the focal point to be a giant egg but instead of a bird I decided on having a baby microraptor coming out of the egg. I wanted the piece to be other-wordly and a fantasy landscape.

My style is to use bold, bright colours and I wanted to create a fantasy setting that would be uplifting and let the public get lost in the picture. For me new beginnings also represent a new sunrise, a new day appearing, a star being born, new plants breaking through the arid land. I also wanted to show water as with water there is always the chance of life.

I painted this piece in a range of colours in acrylic paint.

I wanted the viewer to be taken somewhere else, creating a scene that is a glimpse of another world where life if being reborn. To me space offers endless possibilities.

  •  I am a mural artist based on the Isle of Wight, where I have painted inside & outside walls for various clients with my company, Freesky Designs. I have been drawing and painting since an early age. I studied Art & Design at Gloucester College of Art where I realised I preferred using a graphic style with bold colours. I have spent the years since taking on new projects that push my capabilities and expand my portfolio. My creative goal is to try and make the environment we inhabit a more colourful place, whether it is artwork on a canvas to brighten up someone’s home, or a bespoke wall painting for indoor or outdoors, to brighten up any given space.

I like to challenge myself by taking on projects that may be out of my comfort zone and I also enjoy drawing in black & white. My preferred medium is to paint in acrylic as I feel I can build up the shading I want to use and find it is great for creating texture. I enjoy the feeling you can give someone from producing a piece of artwork that is just for them.

  • Artwork is painted onto 9mm thick plywood with a 2inch black frame, suitable for indoor display & will last for around 2 year’s outside, much longer if in a sheltered position, the artwork is varnished & robust.
