My artwork for the Breakout 2021 is an image of Pentre Ifan. I chose this as I felt it would represent Pembrokeshire with its feeling of wonder and mystery to our Summer visitors. Also as the image will be viewed at a distance in most cases I felt it needed to be colourful and textural.

This monument can be found on the Preseli Hills. It goes back to the New Stone Age and was an ancient burial chamber. Where pyramids were used as tombs in ancient Egypt, so were ancient monuments such as Pentre Ifan which goes back as far as 3500 BCE and it is the oldest monument of this kind in Wales. I felt through the media of acrylic and methods used with texture and paint I have shown the beautiful mystical wonder that Pembrokeshire has to offer not only to our visitors but to the people of Pembrokeshire, and I hope everyone who views the finished image will agree.

  • Since winning a local Eisteddfod at the age of 12 I have always had an interest in art. During my early married life and bringing up family my interest waned. However, in later life I took up local art classes and joined U3a and then led art groups over the years. Enjoying the camaraderie and encouraging others to enjoy the therapy of painting and adding to my skill in handling the media of watercolour. We have had annual art exhibitions which have been very successful and also promoted U3a to the people who visited and bought paintings.

I have for years painted realistically and it is only recently I have been inspired to paint more abstract. During lockdown I have joined two online classes as I found artists that inspired me with their fluidity and colourful use of watercolour. Loving the movement of colours on wet paper but also the edges on dry paper. Using different brushes and various tools to create stunning effects. Artists such as Scot Swainson, Janette Philipps, Jane Betteridge and Zoe Gemzoe have instilled in me a reason to paint and Louise Fletcher, has encouraged me and been my mentor over lockdown. This has led me into more abstract images in acrylic media. These inspire me because of the texture and stunning effects that can be achieved by using gesso, collage and gay abandon and really enjoying the effective images that appear. Thoroughly feeding my interest in different media and effects. I heard about the Breakout Gallery this year online and was thrilled to be accepted to enter this amazing exhibition and I wish them great success and interest for many years to come.
