This piece depicts a glorious, colourful sunrise, with a fishing boat heading out to start a new day at sea. It is an acrylic painting on wooden board. The brief was ‘new beginnings’, so I started word association... spring, new life, change, fresh start, future plans etc. Eventually I came out with ‘sunrise’. It’s a key factor of every ‘new day’- who hasn’t promised themselves ‘the diet starts tomorrow’ or ‘tomorrow will be better’? We pin a lot of hopes and aspirations on ‘tomorrow’, which always starts with a sunrise. I didn’t want to create a boring, bleak sunrise though, I wanted to capture one so glorious that all you could do was stop and take it all in, really appreciate the fact that it is a ‘new dawn, new day’. As I often turn to the sea for inspiration, that seemed like the best setting. Then I thought about who would be there to witness that sunrise? So I thought about the really early risers, like the fishermen, who probably see more sunrises over the sea than anyone else! (Also, as I was painting it and playing around with possible titles, I was reminded of the song ‘New Day’ by Muse- It’s a new dawn, it’s a new day, it’s a new life, for me, and I’m feeling good.)

I’m a Welsh contemporary artist. I enjoy working in a variety of mediums- often mixing several within the same piece. I love texture and colour as well as including the little details that make you look twice!

I have had my artwork exhibited globally and I’ve working in a variety of sizes, from pieces the size of my hand to full wall murals.

I tend to capture landscapes more than anything else, I love the beach and the sea. We have such beautiful beaches in Wales, it’s hard not to be inspired by it.

When I’m working on a piece, my aim is to capture a feeling and share that with others. It’s not just about the way it looks, but how it makes you feel.

As well as art work, I enjoy reading, retro gaming and computer coding. I work full time in education and I have two young children- which means plenty of excuses to visit the beach!

  • Artwork is painted onto 9mm thick plywood with a 2inch black frame, suitable for indoor display & will last for around 2 year’s outside, much longer if in a sheltered position, the artwork is varnished & robust.
